The simplicity of the installation contrasts with the rest of the exhibition and recalls the artist’s series of experiments in which the acoustic potential of a given place was explored by repetitive actions on instruments such as an electric bass or a pair of drumsticks. Here, on the contrary, the sound and the publication cut us off from the creaking floor for a moment. Through the sound piece and as we turn the pages, it is another territory that gradually unfolds from this listening station.
We dive in.
The sound composition was performed in a single take of about 40 minutes on the melodica, a breath-activated keyed instrument. The artist worked with different effects and played with certain harmonies to create sound textures that weave together as the chords intertwine, forming a veil that slowly envelops us.
We lose our footing.
The images we see in the edition are taken from the artist’s photographic archives. They are the result of a camera malfunction. By using these unexpected images, the artist manages to fill the gap between his sound creations and his photographic practice. The overexposure of the film reveals grainy welts that echo the range of the sound composition.
We look up.
Like the chair turned towards the window, the whole installation offers an opening and a breath of fresh air within the exhibition. Everyone is free to let themselves be transported in their own way.
We breathe.
